Uxbridge College students from Hillingdon and beyond were thrilled to receive awards from urban music hero Kanya King, founder of the prestigious Music of Black Origin (MOBO) music awards.

The inspirational business speaker who re-mortgaged her house to launch the first awards fourteen years ago is now adored by millions around the world for giving black artists the opportunity to shine on a music platform of their own. Kanya told students how she came up with the idea when she was a television researcher and put everything on the line to see her dream become reality.

The audience could relate to her story because as the youngest of nine children she struggled financially early on, especially as her father died when she was only 13. Like many of the students at the college she did various jobs including working in a bakery and market research to earn a living before landing a job at Carlton Television where she became a founding member and part of the production team for the Chrystal Rose Show.

About this time she realised that black people should trumpet their own successes and launched the MOBO awards which have grown it into a global phenomenon adored by top music stars, many of them legends of the music industry.

Having just driven – very slowly through a town centre the thing that struck me was the number of coffee bars there are now and so congratulations has to go to Sahar Hashemi who had the idea to change Britain from a nation of tea drinkers when she opened her first Coffee Republic outlet in 1995.

Sahar has a passion for coffee and a fighting entrepreneurial spirit lead her to leave a City legal career to start up the highly successful business with her brother Bobby.    As a top business speaker, her experience as a young entrepreneur is invaluable for anyone with an idea to develop and a dream to believe in. With no retail entrepreneurial experience, the brother and sister team overcame a number of obstacles along the way. Sahar and Bobby believe if they did it, anyone can do it.    The rest as we know is history.
